On a recent trip racing in Wales I stayed at Springfield Farm Bunkhouse with 25 mountain bikers from the University of Edinburgh. The self-catered bunkhouse is part of a renovated cottage and served as a perfect base for the weekend’s race at Moelfre, 12 miles from the farm. Located in the heart of North Wales overlooking the Ceriog Valley, Springfield Farm is also well situated for groups looking to to visit Snowdonia National Park on foot or by bike.
While the house includes all the necessary modern conveniences, it still feels tough enough to take the strain of muddy kit and the general carnage caused by any big group. There is a large kitchen equipped with a fridge, microwave, two big tables and huge pots and pans – perfect for cooking up big pasta meals at the end of the day. Also on the ground floor is a living room and full laundry facilities which were a great help in drying-out all gear in advance of the next days’ riding.
On the first floor there are five carpeted bunkrooms ranging from one single occupancy room to the largest seven bunk dorm. There are several bathrooms and hot water seemed plentiful during our stay, although some people from the lower end of the pecking order did complain about cold showers.
For anyone wanting an inexpensive, clean and functional place to stay for some outdoor adventures in North Wales, Springfield Farm Bunkhouse is ideal. Essentially in the middle of nowhere, the accommodation is remote enough that you’re unlikely to be bothered, except perhaps by the rare horse rider or odd sheep.
Over weekends there is a minimum booking of two nights for £576. Otherwise rates work out at £18 per night per person with a minimum booking for 16 people, or the monetary equivalent (£288 per night).
Getting there responsibly
Getting there would be challenging without a car, and you certainly need to follow advice from the hosts and travel equipped with directions; Sat Nav will get you very lost in the seemingly endless network of roads which aren’t yet well-charted by these devices. Print off the GoogleMap to the appropriate scale before you go and you should be set.
